Suzanne Portier had recommended a tiny coffee shop located on Conk Avenue. It was very small, tucked away in the middle of nowhere and, when Marie arrived there at 3:25, the place was absolutely dead. There was only one woman sitting at a table, and that was Suzanne Portier. She peered up at Marie through her red-framed glasses and gave a hesitant smile.

Marie quickly grabbed a coffee—a house blend that smelled amazing and was about as dark as midnight—and joined Suzanne at the table. The place only had six tables, and this one was all the way in the back.

“Hey there,” Marie said. “This place being so small and hidden away…it’s almost as if you don’t want people to know you’re speaking with me.”

“Oh, I won’t lie to you,” Suzanne said. “If word got out that I was speaking with you, I’d get a few questions here and there. I would have just spoken to you on the phone, but with so many people walking back and forth, it can be a bit much. And because of what happened to poor Tyler Greene last night, there have been knocks on my door all day.”

“Did you know Mr. Greene?” Marie asked.

“Not particularly well. Just a working relationship. He was usually right down the middle on most political issues, so he was pretty easy to work with on most things.” She sipped from her coffee and, looking up almost secretly, she added: “But I guess you’re here to talk specifically about the rezoning plans.”

She now fully had Marie’s attention. She sat up in her chair and leaned forward. “That’s right. How did you know?”

“A while after you left town hall, I asked our clerk what you’d been asking about. Also, if I’m honest, I heard some rumors about a confrontation you had with Tyler yesterday.”

“I heard some of the argument between you and Carter,” Marie said. “I sort of gathered that you aren’t a fan of what he has planned for the rezoning.”

“I’m not. I’ve been vocally against it for a while, mainly because there’s just no real reason for it. A few businesses stand to make a bit more in the end and if all goes well, it might bolster revenue along Main Street and help keep tourism rolling in, but that’s about it. It’s a large gamble for a small possible outcome. And honestly, it’s really not even a gamble, per se. It’s just…unnecessary.”

Hearing this from someone who worked in city hall was jarring. She was beginning to truly feel there might be a legitimate conspiracy not only against her, but others in town as well.

“So do you think he has some sort of ulterior motive lurking behind it all?” Marie asked. She knew she sounded like a woman who felt as if she was being victimized by some harebrained conspiracy theory, but it was too late to pull back now.

“I think he might,” Suzanne said. “But I have no idea what it might be. And without proof, I can’t just go making such assumptions in public.
